In the pursuit of a career in Medicine

Our next course will be held at the University of Kent at Canterbury starting Friday 13th April through to Sunday 15th April. Students between the ages of 15 and 19 are welcome to attend either as residents or non-residents. The course is designed to help students decide whether medicine is the right career for them and to assist them in the tricky process of getting into medical school.
There are three components to the course:
1) A variety of lectures spread out over the three days given by our team of eminent consultants who will give you a brief insight into their speciality and how they got there! Our team of doctors includes specialists in subjects as diverse as Neurosurgery, where top neurosurgeon/sports injuries specialist, Peter Hamlyn, will talk you through, his involvement in the health aspects of the successful Olympic bid and his role as a neurosurgeon with a particular interest in Sports Injuries. We also have specialists in Oncology, Dermatology, Orthopaedics and General Practice to name but a few. All are deeply committed in their desire to help you make the right choices when it comes to a medical career..
2) Our ever growing band of Medical students (some of whom came on our very first course)! will be on site to help you through a series of practicals during which you will get the opportunity to practice your surgical and diagnostic skills,.We have a large array of mock skins to suture and fake arms to take blood from.We also have two long suffering stooges who will allow you to listen to their hearts and carry out various basic medical tests on them. The Medical students are from a variety of Medical Schools, including Oxbridge and you will have plenty of time to question them on life as a Medical student and which Medical School would be best suited for you as an individual. Our practical sessions have been further expanded and now include;
Venesection (blood taking and joint injecting), Suturing (stitching wounds), Using a mannequin to learn normal and abnormal heart and lung sounds
Resuscitation skills, Intubation of a patient., Saving patients with an obstruction or pneumothorax (collapsed lung) by inserting needles into the throat or lung of special mannequins.
Use of mannequins to view abnormal eye and ear conditions, Use of endoscopes to practice techniques for viewing patients stomach or bowel.
Checking for breast and testicular tumours using special models, Examination technique training. 'Meet the medical students'
xray assessment, Discussion of ethical scenarios used in the interview selection process. Many medical skills centres do not have the breadth of equipment available on this course!
3) Finally, Dr Fox will give you a very comprehensive series of lectures covering subjects such as how to optimize your chances of getting into Medical school, tips for writing the perfect Personal Statement and how to present yourself at Interview. Dr. Fox has a wealth of experience in reading Personal Statements not just for applications to Medical School but for Post graduate Doctors hoping to climb the career path. Indeed he has written a book on the subject. An Interview and assessment of your draft personal statement are available for an additional £30. Our interviewers are all very experienced in student interview technique.
