The Programme

The programme starts with a brief introduction and ice-breaker exercise. This is followed with an account by a medical student of their life at medical school. This is always well received and humorous but insightful.

On Friday afternoon we will have a series of lectures about a career in medicine, choosing a medical school, the personal statement and the interview process.

There are regular breaks for refreshments and lunch will be provided.

On Saturday morning after a pleasant breakfast for those who have rolled out of bed early enough, we meet for two lectures from top consultants about their speciality and why it might intrigue you as much as it has them.

We then break into groups of approximately 7-10 students for practicals, this gives students an opportunity to get to know one another in small groups. After a pleasant lunch, we restart the practical session, all practicals are run by our team of medical students. This gives an opportunity to chat informally to medics from a range of different medical schools and get an idea of what they do, what they enjoy and how they got to medical school.

After a break for tea, we have two further lectures from consultants.

These are aimed at giving a flavour of their specialty, the additional training required and their role with in the team. We then have Supper in the University after which you can relax and chat or for the older students a trip into nearby historic Canterbury for the evening may be preferable. On Sunday, the programme is repeated with new practicals and lecturers from different specialties, two before and two after the practical sessions.

On the last morning, we have a number of specialists speaking followed by Dr Fox who will advise you on the selection process, personal statement and what to expect at interview.

We see the course as an opportunity to see if you like medicine as a career, but just as importantly, to see if it is not for you.
